Utila Summary

Home ] Up ]

A synopsis of my trip to Utila in March 2001.

Diving:

Similar to other parts of the Caribbean. More sponges. Lots of soft coral. Reefs are in good shape except for the shallowest where the elk horn and stag horn coral is hurting. Reefs vary from shallow to walls that drop into the Cayman trench to small off-shore sea mounts. reef structure not as spectacular as the Caymans. Not a lot of big fish. 10 days of diving was a little much for me as everything started looking the same.

The Lodge:

Utila Lodge. Small. Eight rooms. Food is filling if a little bland. I was hoping for some fresh local caught fish, but never got any. Service is good. Rooms are clean and large. Not fancy. Dive operation is well run. Boat captain and dive master are top notch. However, with 14 divers, the diving got a little crowded.

The Island:

Not much here. It's small. You come for the diving. Still undeveloped. Hope it stays that way.
